The everyday case is photo restoration. JPEG re-compresses every save — open, crop, save, open, retouch, save again, and the file gets fuzzier each round. PNG is lossless: once converted, every subsequent edit-and-save freezes the pixels exactly. The second case is alpha. JPEG cannot store transparency at all. If the next step is removing the background, masking out a subject, or compositing onto a new layer, PNG is the only sensible intermediate. The third case is OCR and documentation: JPEG smears text edges into compression artifacts; PNG keeps every pixel where it was.
